Pediatric Advisor Credits
The Pediatric Advisor contains health education information
for parents on a wide number of health and family issues.
It is designed to be of use for families, including
single-parent families, with children and adolescents
through age 21. The program emphasizes positive approaches
to decision-making with newborn and infant care, sick child
care, and behavior, as well as the crises that families
occasionally face.
AUTHORS
Barton D. Schmitt, M.D. - Health/Medical Information
Dr. Barton D. Schmitt is a professor of pediatrics at the
University of Colorado School of Medicine. He graduated
from Yale University, Cornell University Medical College,
and the University of Minnesota pediatric residency program.
After serving in the United States Air Force as a
pediatrician, he became a full time faculty member at the
University of Colorado School of Medicine. For over
25 years he has specialized in general, behavioral, and
emergency pediatrics. He is currently the director of
Consultative Services at The Children's Hospital of Denver.
He has written over 100 articles for physicians, and his
well-known book, "Pediatric Telephone Protocols" (Decision
Press, 1994), is in its fifth printing. The second edition
of his book for parents entitled "Your Child's Health" was
released by Bantam Books, Inc., in September 1991. He is on
the editorial board of Contemporary Pediatrics.
American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry was
created in 1953 and now represents over 5,700 child and
adolescent psychiatrists. AACAP members research, diagnose,
and treat psychiatric disorders affecting children and
adolescents and their families. The Academy is dedicated to
supporting this work through a variety of programs including
government liaison, national public information, and
continuing medical education.
The Asthma Task Force - Asthma Information
Many of the topics on asthma were written by Jeff S.
Wagener, M.D., director of Pulmonary Medicine, and Rosemary
Simkins, R.N., M.S.N., at The Children's Hospital, Denver,
Colorado. Contributions were made by other members of the
Asthma Task Force, including Jim Shira, M.D., and Cindy
Luther, R.T.
Robert M. Brayden, M.D. - Health/Medical Information
Dr. Robert Brayden is an associate professor of pediatrics
at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He
graduated from Colorado State University, St. Louis
University School of Medicine, and the University of
Colorado pediatric residency program. He was a fellow at
Vanderbilt University in general and behavioral pediatrics
and remained on the Vanderbilt University Department of
Pediatrics faculty for five years, at which time he worked
in general pediatrics and child abuse evaluation. He joined
the University of Colorado pediatric faculty and has
conducted clinical and research projects in immunization and
preventive services delivery. He is Director of the
Partners in Health Care program, which uses a parent-held
health record, The Denver Child Health Passport, to link
parents, care providers and community to promote child
health.
Patricia Bromberger, M.D. - Premature Infant Information
Dr. Patricia Bromberger is a neonatologist who works with
Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, California. She also is the
director of the Infant Special Care Follow-Up Clinic at
Kaiser. She graduated from the University of California at
San Diego (UCSD) Medical School and completed her pediatrics
internship and residency at Tufts New England Medical Center
in Boston and the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.
She completed her fellowship in neonatology at UCSD. For
more than 15 years she has been explaining neonatology to
families who have had babies in intensive care nurseries.
Kate Capage / Synexus, Inc. - Preparing and Caring for
Newborns
For the past 10 years, Kate Capage has specialized in
working with mothers and children. After running her own
day care center for 7 years, she began work as a doula and
has helped a broad range of families begin life with a new
baby. Synexus, Inc., a small publishing firm in Boulder,
Colorado, was founded by Colette Schulte, M.P.H., to develop
and publish information of special interest to mothers and
others interested in early child development.
Kenny H. Chan, MD - Surgical Discharge Instructions
Kenny H. Chan, MD, is Chairman, Department of Pediatric
Otolaryngology. His main role is to coordinate the delivery
of pediatric otolaryngologic services to the greater Denver
Metropolitan area and the Rocky Mountain region through his
four-physician department. His educational responsibilities
include training otolaryngology and pediatric residents as
well as third- and fourth-year medical students. His
research interest is in pediatric chronic sinusitis.
H. Peter Chase, MD - Diabetes Mellitus
Dr. H. Peter Chase is a professor of pediatrics at the
University of Colorado School of Medicine. He is the
clinical director of the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood
Diabetes at the University of Colorado. He has written 144
research articles, 36 book chapters, and two video
productions. He is on the editorial boards of two medical
journals. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin
School of Medicine and did his pediatric training and 1 year
of endocrine-diabetes specialty training at Stanford
University. He completed the remainder of his specialty
training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine
and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
Edward R. Christophersen, Ph.D. - Behavioral Information
Dr. Edward Christophersen received his Ph.D. degree in
psychology from the University of Kansas. He has practiced
in pediatric outpatient settings for over 20 years, first at
the University of Kansas Medical Center and more recently at
the Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. He
has written 150 articles and chapters and has written or
edited eight books, including three books for parents ("Baby
Owner's Manual: What to Expect and How to Survive the First
Year," "Little People: Guidelines for Commonsense Child
Rearing," and "Beyond Discipline: Parenting That Lasts a
Lifetime") and one textbook, "Pediatric Compliance: A Guide
for the Primary Care Physician." He has given over 300
invited lectures at pediatric CME meetings. He is the
review and special articles editor for the Journal of
Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.
Christina Comenos, L.M.S.W.
Christina Comenos has degrees in Social Work and Human
Development. She works a the Spurwink Child Abuse Program
in Portland, Maine, where she specializes in forensic
interviewing of children. She also provides treatment to
children coping with abuse related issues.
Sara Fidanza, RN - Gastrostomy Care
Sara Fidanza is a nurse practitioner and a specialist in
GI and nutrition at The Children's Hospital in Denver.
Carla Garrity, Ph.D. - Bullying
Dr. Carla Garrity practices child psychology in Denver,
Colorado. She helped start the Neuro-Developmental Center,
a multidisciplinary team for assessing and treating
children. She also has taught child psychopathology at the
University of Denver's School of Professional Psychology.
Her special interests have included children of divorce,
gifted children, and friendship development during
childhood. In consulting with local school districts
regarding social skills training for children without
friends, she developed an interest in children victimized by
bullies. Currently she is consulting with the Cherry Creek
School District in developing The Bully Project, an
intervention program for elementary-aged children to stop
bullying.
Suzanne Glaser, R.N., and Norine Hemphill, R.N., M.S. -
Randi Hagerman, M.D. - Fragile X Syndrome
Dr. Randi Hagerman is a Professor of Pediatrics and Section
Head of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at the
University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She
graduated from medical school at Stanford University in 1975
and carried out her residency training in Pediatrics at
Stanford and subsequently at the University of California in
San Diego. She completed a fellowship in ambulatory
pediatrics and in learning disorders at the University of
California in San Diego. She moved to the Child Development
Unit at The Children's Hospital in Denver in 1980 and
organized a fragile X clinic there in 1981. She helped to
establish the National Fragile X Foundation in 1984 and has
edited and written three books and over 100 articles on
fragile X syndrome. Her research and clinical interests
involve neurodevelopmental disorders including molecular
genetic aspects and treatment issues.
Todd Jacobs, M.D. - Prevention of STDs and Pregnancy
Kathryn Jens, Ph.D. - Bullying
Dr. Kathryn Jens is a psychologist in the Cherry Creek
School District in the Denver, CO, area. She also has an
independent practice specializing in psychological trauma.
David W. Kaplan, M.D., M.P.H. - Adolescent Health
Information
Dr. David W. Kaplan is a professor of pediatrics, head of
Adolescent Medicine at the University of Colorado School of
Medicine, and chief of Adolescent Medicine at The Children's
Hospital of Denver. He graduated from the University of
Rochester and Case Western Reserve University of Medicine.
He did his pediatric training at the University of Colorado
and his fellowship training at the Children's Hospital
Medical Center in Boston. He earned a master's degree in
public health from Harvard. Dr. Kaplan has written numerous
scientific articles dealing with the adolescent age group
and serves as a national consultant for issues relating to
adolescent health services.
Bonnie S. Keckley, R.N, Ph.D. - Voiding Cystourethrogram
Dr. Keckley is employed as a radiology nursing care
coordinator at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester,
Virginia, where she has worked since graduation from
Shenandoah University School of Nursing in 1976. Dr.
Keckley also has a private holistic nursing practice in
Winchester. She is listed in the 1996-97 Who's Who in
American Nursing and is a member of the American Holistic
Nurse Association and the Business and Professional Women's
Organization.
Kathleen A. Mammel, M.D. - Adolescent Health Information
Dr. Kathleen A. Mammel is director of Adolescent Pediatrics
at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. She
graduated from the University of Michigan School of
Medicine. She did her pediatric residency and adolescent
medicine fellowship at the University of Colorado and The
Children's Hospital of Denver. Dr. Mammel teaches pediatric
and internal medicine residents at Beaumont. Her primary
interests are adolescent eating disorders,
medical-psychological problems, and sexuality.
Donna W. Manczak, Ph.D. - Parenting Information
Dr. Donna Manczak is a faculty member with the Bon Secours
family practice residency program in St. Clair Shores,
Michigan, and a limited licensed psychologist. She earned
her Ph.D. from Michigan State University in the area of
child development and also holds graduate degrees in
clinical psychology and public health. For the last
15 years she has taught psychological medicine to family
practice residents. She has provided direct psychotherapy
to families and children. Much of her published work and
clinical practice focuses on parenting and healthy family
life.
Lottie M. Mendelson, R.N., M.S., P.N.P. - Practice
Newsletter
Lottie Mendelson is a freelance writer/editor for several
magazines and books on pediatric subjects. She coauthored
"The Complete Book of Parenting" and was a contributing
author for AAP's "Caring For Your Baby and Young Child." She
has conducted classes and seminars for all ages on family
life, sex education, and parenting. Currently, she works
for Cascade Physicians in Portland, Oregon, and writes two
monthly newsletters. Ms. Mendelson graduated from the
University of Portland. She earned a master's degree in
nursing education and a P.N.P. from Oregon Health Sciences
University.
Gail Mills, R.N., B.S.N. - Discharge Instructions
Gail Mills has practiced in the Day Surgery Department at
The Children's Hospital of Denver for over 15 years. Her
primary focus includes pediatric patients and families
undergoing Ear/Nose/Throat surgeries.
Marianne R. Neifert, M.D. - Breast-Feeding Information
Dr. Marianne R. Neifert is cofounder of and medical
consultant to the HealthONE Lactation Program at Rose
Medical Center in Denver. She also is a clinical professor
of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of
Medicine. She graduated from the University of Hawaii and
University of Colorado School of Medicine and completed her
pediatric residency training at the University of Colorado
Medical Center and affiliated hospitals. Dr. Neifert is a
member of the professional advisory board of La Leche
League, International; the American Academy of Pediatrics
Work Group on Breastfeeding; and a founding board member of
the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. She has authored two
popular child-rearing books: "Dr. Mom" and "Dr. Mom's
Parenting Guide." She is a contributing editor for
"Parenting" and writes a bimonthly column for "Baby Talk"
magazine. She teaches medical students, residents, and
child health associates, has published numerous
breast-feeding articles in the medical literature, and has
lectured in over 45 states.
William Porter, Ph.D. - Bullying
Dr. William Porter received his doctorate in child clinical
psychology from Denver University. He has devoted his
professional career to developing mental health programming
for children and families. His efforts in the development
of outdoor therapeutic, suicide prevention, home alone,
adolescent runaway, and other intervention programs for
children in need have earned him national acclaim. He is
currently working in Pupil Services in the Cherry Creek
School District in Colorado.
Hannah M. Pressler, MHS, RN, CS, PNP
Hannah Pressler works at the Spurwink Child Abuse Program in
Portland, Maine. She has eighteen years of experience in
primary care pediatrics. During this time she also provided
health care to sick newborns, refugee children from a
variety of international settings, and children who
experienced various forms of maltreatment.
Frances (Randi) Price, RN, PNP
Randi Price is a Nurse Practitioner for pediatric surgery at
The Children's Hospital of Denver. Her major role is to
coordinate the delivery of pediatric outpatient surgical
clinics, run the bowel management program, perform history
and physicals, and serve as a hospital resource for
gastrostomy/ostomy patients.
Patty Purvis, Ph.D. - Single and Step-Parenting Information
Dr. Pat Purvis began working with children as an elementary
education teacher. She then received a master's degree in
special education and taught multiply handicapped
youngsters. While participating as the special education
coordinator of the UAF at Kansas University Medical Center,
she began formal training in developmental and child
psychology. She currently is an associate professor of
pediatrics and a psychologist in the Behavioral Pediatric
Psychology Section of Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas
City, Missouri. She is particularly interested in parent
training and family dynamics and has published articles on
school problems.
Lawrence R. Ricci, M.D. - Child Abuse
Dr. Lawrence R. Ricci is a pediatrician and board-certified
emergency physician who has specialized in the care of
abused children for the past 10 years. He is the medical
director of The Child Abuse Program at The Spurwink Clinic
in Portland, Maine, and is on the teaching staff for the
pediatric residency program at the Maine Medical Center.
Dr. Ricci graduated from Hahnemann University Medical School
in Philadelphia and completed his pediatric training program
at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. During the
past 10 years as a child abuse specialist, Dr. Ricci has
evaluated over 3,000 children. He has authored numerous
articles on child abuse and has served as the chair of The
Section on Child Abuse for the American Academy of
Pediatrics from 1990 through 1994.
Nancy Sager - Bullying
Ms. Nancy Sager is an educational/behavioral consultant with
the Cherry Creek School District in the Denver, CO, area.
She has worked with special needs children for 25 years.
Ellyn Satter, M.S., M.S.S.W., R.D. - Nutrition Information
Ellyn Satter is a therapist, author, and lecturer. She is a
registered dietitian and a holder of the Diplomate in
Clinical Social Work, and she has a private counseling
practice. Ms. Satter is a therapist specializing in the
treatment of eating disorders in children and adults. She
is recognized by parents and professionals as an authority
on nutrition and the feeding of infants and children. Ms.
Satter says, "Too many people today are unsuccessful with
eating, and unsuccessful with feeding their children.
Adults are anxious and ambivalent about their own
eating--and these feelings rub off on their parenting with
food. I try to help children and adults so they can be
positive and joyful about eating." Her books, "Child of

Eat ... But Not Too Much" (Bull Publishing, 1987), and her
videotape "Feeding With Love and Good Sense" (Video Tape

Section of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, Hackensack
The Section of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics of the
Hackensack Medical Center's Institute for Child Development
is made up of fellowship-trained developmental
pediatricians. The Institute provides diagnostic and
therapeutic services for children with potentially chronic
handicapping conditions, and educational programs for
pediatric residents, medical students, and developmental
pediatric fellows in affiliation with the UMDNJ-New Jersey
Medical School.
